Current Status

In September 2020, Galway County Council refused planning permission for a proposed Biogas Facility in Gort.

The developer lodged an appeal to An Bord Pleanala.

An Bord Pleanala opened a case (https://www.pleanala.ie/en-ie/case/308942) with a decision due on 30/04/2021

We are still awaiting a decision on this from An Bord Pleanala

The following is the current timeline:

1st application

  • 25 April 2018 : 1st Planning Application from Sustainable Bio-Energy Ltd for a Bio gas plant in Gort, with Galway Co.Co. (Planning Ref. 18502) Approx 140 objections were lodged against this planning application.
  • 19 June 2018 : Galway Co. Co. Planning Department requests extensive further information from the Bio gas compay. Deadline in 6 months.
  • 14 Dec. 2018, just before the deadline the Bio gas company withdraws their application.

2nd Application

  • 21/11/2019 : Sustainable Bio-Energy Limited Applies for Planning Permission
  • … 400+ objections were lodged against this renewed planning application.
  • 24/01/2020 : Due Date for Galway County Council Planning Decision
  • 02/12/2020 : Decision made by Galway County Council – REFUSAL
  • 17/12/2020 : Applicant appeals the case to An Bord Pleanala
  • 30/04/2021 : Decision Date by An Bord Pleanala
  • 04/06/2022 : Request for further information by An Bord Pleanala
